Unit Objective(s)/Overview:

Students will

  1. be introduced to the field of fingerprint biometrics by viewing a powerpoint presentation and completing journal entries on the information provided in the presentation;
  2. examine how minutiae points are extracted from fingerprints to create a stored template to be used for fingerprint identification and verification. Using Cartesian and Polar graph paper the students will plot and record the x and y coordinates and angles for each minutiae point from a given fingerprint;
  3. analyze the activity by writing a lab report summary and responding to journal questions about activity.
