Voice Recognition Student Handout
Workstation 5

In this activity, you will create an image of your voice. You will use a microphone and computer software to accomplish this goal. You will print 3 images out to make comparisons at a later time.

Voice recognition is used to verify your vocal characteristics, so you will need to speak 3 words into the microphone. Use the Audacity software and the instructions handout provided by your teacher at this workstation to complete this task.

You will need to speak and record three words into the microphone attached to the computer. Each person will record the word "password" at some time during this process. You will choose 2 other words of your own to record as well. However, record each word individually. Every person will say these words in random order for the purpose of comparison at a later date. Once you have recorded your voice waves for the first word with this technology, you will copy this image (with print screen) into one Word document. It will look similar to the example here. Then, say the next word and copy it into a Word document by the same process. Finally, say the third word and copy and past it with the same process. Remember, one of the 3 words you record must be "password." Once all three images are into the Word document, resize them to cover one 8X10 sheet of paper. Above each sample in Word type SAMPLE (and choose any two-digit number to place above each image). Now, print the images.

After your have a printed copy of the three images on one 8X10 sheet of paper, answer the following questions:

1. My first word was ___________________.

2. My second word was ______________________.

3. My third word was _______________________.

4. What differences do you notice between the appearance of the first recording and the second? For instance, describe the closeness of the waves, the height of them, or the gaps between them: _______________________________________________________________________________________________

5. What are the differences between the first and third samples? ________________________________________________________________________

6. What are the differences between the second and third samples? _____________________________________________________________________

Submit this handout and your sample sheet to the teacher.
