Workstation Set Up
Teachers Instructions for Lesson 1 of  “Discovering You, Me, and Us” by Donna Hage, NBCT

The teacher should arrange the classroom into the following 5 stations. The students will rotate throughout the stations during the two 50 to 90-minute class periods to collect data as suggested on each station handout.

Station 1: Hand Geometry
Materials needed at station: scanner, black and white or color printer, computer, clean rags, metric ruler, data collection handouts

Assemble a scanner that is attached to a computer with a black and white or color printer. The arrangement should be conducive to students who will put one hand, palm side down on the face of the scanner, edit the image to eliminate unnecessary surface space around the hand by cropping and resizing, and print the image. Place a clean rag at the station so students may clean the surface of the scanner after each scan. Place metric rulers at this site so students may conduct the necessary measurements as specified on their handout.

Station 2: Iris Scan
Materials needed at station: digital camera (or Kennavision or digital flex cam), color printer, computer, data collection handouts, photo editing software (to crop and resize the image if necessary), scissors

Assemble this station so that students can take a close up picture of one of their irises with a digital camera (or Kennavision or digital flex cam) NOTE: The higher the megapixels on the digital camera, the better the image will appear. This image will need to be uploaded to photo editing software for cropping, resizing, and/or printing on a color printer.  Place scissors at the station so students can cut the image according to the specified size on their handout (the size of a 5X7 horizontal picture). As an alternative, you may place a disk, flash drive, or some form of saving the file so that it may be reproduced at a later time instead of at this station immediately.

Station 3: Face Recognition
Materials needed at station: FACES software OR digital camera, computer, black and white or color printer, photo editing software, data collection handouts, 8X10 sheets of paper, metric ruler

Assemble this station so that students may recreate an image close to their own on the FACES software OR so that they may capture a digital camera image of their head (so that it fills the complete screen of the photo as specified in the US Passport requirements). They will print the FACES image to a color or black and white printer or upload the digital camera image to a computer and print it to cover the entire 8X10 portion of the paper.

Station 4: Fingerprints
Materials needed at station: Analysis of a Fingerprint handout blue or black fingerpaint, blot paper, scanner, photo editing software, data collection handouts, scissors, cleaning materials (soap, alcohol swabs, etc.), computer, black and white printer, fingerprint pattern sheet, 3X5 lineless index cards, Puppy mouse and software, transparent tape, red pens

Assemble this station so that students may take a fingerprint of one of their thumbs with an ink pad and piece of paper. Place blot paper at the station so that students may remove the wet ink before placing it on the scanner to reproduce the image on a computer and black and white printer according to specifications on the student handout. They will then need to make comparisons between the fingerprint and the pattern sheet, according to the student handout. You can also print out directions for doing a fingerprint to place at the station. If you choose to use the Puppy mouse, you will need to review the instructions and make modifications for your students' use; they will need to use print screen to move their fingerprint from the screen to a Word document for later analysis.

Station 5: Voice Recognition
Materials needed at station: computer, microphone hooked to computer, Audacity software (free download), black and white or color printer, data collection handouts

Assemble this station so that students may record three words (two words of their own chosing and the common word "password" among all students) into a microphone that is attached to the computer. For specific instructions on using the software, visit the Audacity website. There are some specific tutorials on the site as well. They will need to copy three images (by print screen function) that are created on the software to a Word document, bitmap, or Paint program (or similar program) so that it may be printed for future use.
