Parenting and Child Development: Standard 4:  Support Systems for Families (0902.S.4)
The students will explore and develop criteria for a family support system.
0902.4.2  Review current laws related to parenting.
Standard 5:  Career Management and Technology (0902.S.5)
The students will demonstrate an understanding of careers in the area of parenting/child development and how electronic technologies are used within these career fields.
0902.5.1  Explore career opportunities related to parenting/child development.
0902.5.2  Use electronic technologies to complete a variety of assignments.
0902.5.3  Demonstrate appropriate written and oral communications.

Objective(s)

Students will:

  • explore career opportunities related in the child development and biometrics fields
  • demonstrate appropriate written and oral communications through a PowerPoint presentation
  • review current laws (new technology and biometrics) related to parenting/child development

Time Required

1 week, 5-50 minute periods

Pre-Requisite Skills

This lesson be taught in the second semester of the school year.  The student needs prior knowledge of child development.

Procedure

  1. The teacher will introduce biometrics to the students using a  KWLH Chart.
  2. The teacher will use vocabulary words from the The Biometrics Task Force Vocabulary Site to create a Word Wall.
  3. The teacher will introduce various career fields that incorporate both child development and biometrics.
  4. The students will do an internet search on these fields. During the search, the students will research the education, location of universities, job characteristics, etc.on a career field.  After the search, the students will give an oral presentation on their research using PowerPoint.  Each career field will be placed on the Word Wall.
  5. The teacher will review privacy issues related to biometrics and current laws.
  6. The students will research on the internet the current laws in child development.  After the search, the students will give an oral presentation on their research using a PowerPoint.  Any new word will be placed on the Word Wall.
  7. Reflection:  The students will type a summary/reflection of what they have learned.  The teacher could review the KWLH Chart.  Students may refer to the Word Wall for assistance.

Differentiated Instruction

Consult your student's IEP, SAT's, and other special needs.

Collaboration

Possible collaborations would include the Business/Technology teachers to help with the PowerPoint Presentations. Also, the Guidance Counselor would be able to assist in the career searches.  Guest speakers could include local colleges and universities, FBI personnel, local child development coordinators, etc.

Possible guest speakers could be Guidance Counselor, Police Officials, Child Development Coordinator, College/University Personnel, etc.
