Objective(s)

Students will:

  • observe, describe, and measure different facial features
  • apply these measurements in the facial geometry aspects of biometrics

Time Required

5 - 50 minute periods

Pre-Requisite Skills

Measurement skills, observation skills.

21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)

FACES software (if available),  Measurement techniques, Excel, digital camera.

Instructional Materials

Rulers, digital camera

Procedure

Have a group of two or three students construct a face from the FACES software ( if available).  If the software is not available, have the students use a digital camera to take pictures of an unidentified  face to use.  The students will perform both quantitative measurements as described on the facial handout and qualitative measurements on the faces to write a detailed description.  The unknown faces will then be displayed and the description read aloud for the others to identify.

Differentiated Instruction

Differentiate instruction as appropriate in the IEP, allow peer work groups, read the instructions aloud, circulate to provide prompts to stay on task, etc.  Collaborate with the special education instructor to ensure that all students are capable of succeeding.  Ensure that all students are successful by close monitoring and seeking the outside help as necessary.

Collaboration

Collaboration can be done using the teaming concept.  The art instructor can help with the photographs, the english instructor can help with the written descriptions, the math educator can help with the measurements.  Many ideas can be utilized with collaboration.

Author's Comments

If the Faces program is not available, provide a photographic release form and have students take digital pictures of parents or others outside of school.  Use the handout sheet as a guide for measurement techniques.

21st Century Assessment/Evaluation

The assessment/evaluation will be the success of the students in measuring and identifying the faces.
