Objective(s)

The students will

  • research biometrics tools, the methods they employ and their limitations
  • discuss the societal issues associated with using biometrics tools

Time Required

3 - 92 minute class period.

Pre-Requisite Skills

digital camera abilities, saving pictures, printing pictures, editing pictures, measuring, terms of facial anatomical orientation

21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)

digital cameras, Photo Shop, or other photo editing software

Instructional Materials

Facial anatomy.docAnatomical characteristics data sheet.docJust For FunName.doc, Facial recognition brochure.doc ,
metric ruler, protractor

Procedure

The instructor will pair up the students.  The students will observe anatomical features of the face that they think would be useful in creating the facial recognition template.  The students should list at least 25 characteristics on the facial anatomy sheet Facial anatomy.doc . The student will then measure the characteristics, using metric rulers and protractors. Students will record the data on the Anatomical characteristics data sheet.doc .  The student will take pictures of one another using a digital camera.  The student will upload the pictures to a computer and print one copy out.  The student will use Photo Shop or some other photo editing program to try to disguise their photo.  The student should be informed that they will be trying to guess who one another are after the image has been "edited" and complete the  Facial recognition analysis.doc handout, which asks them to compile a list of standards that facial recognition companies might require to increase throughput, and decrease false acceptance and false rejection rates.  The student will then create a brochure, using the  Facial recognition brochure.doc as a guideline. Give the students the Brochure Rubric.doc  so the student will know what is expected.

Differentiated Instruction

Refer to the student's individual education plan, higher level students could be asked to create an Excel spreadsheet instead of using the Anatomical characteristics data sheet.doc  , use heterogeneous grouping.

Collaboration

Science, technology, art

Author's Comments

It will be important for the photos to be head shots only, example: if earrings are showing, have them take earrings off.  This lesson could be modified for many different grade levels, for lower grades, the instructor could take the pictures of the students, show the students and then have the students try to identify their photo from the edited photo.
