21st Century Skills: Creativity and intellectual curiosity, Critical thinking and systems thinking, Problem identification, formulation, and solution, Thinking and problem solving skills, Communication skills, Information and media literacy skills, Interpersonal and collaborative skills, Social responsibility, Self direction

Objective(s)

Students will:
  • state the definition of biometrics
  • list the various kinds of biometrics systems and how these systems are being used at the present time
  • list various advantages and disadvantages of each type of biometrics system
  • list various spoofing techniques that have been used with each biometrics system
  • create counteractions for various spoofing techniques
  • use research skills and problem solving skills to devise a security system

Time Required

3 - 45 minute periods

Pre-Requisite Skills

Students will use the internet on the computer to complete research.  Students will use the power point software program to develop a presentation.

21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)

Students will be using internet on computers for research purposes.

Instructional Materials

computers, teacher made guide sheet, teacher made security problem situation sheet for each group

Procedure

  1. Discuss and make a class list of the advantages and disadvantages of using fingerprints as a means of identifying a person.
  2. Introduce the term "biometrics" and define for students.  State how other biometrics systems can be used in place of or along with fingerprinting.
  3. Divide class into 3 cooperative groups.  Explain that each group should use the guide sheet to find information on the various biometrics systems using the Bio 101 web site.  Explain that each group must find information and complete the guide sheet for the following biometrics systems: iris scanning, hand measurements, face patterns, and one system of their choice
  4. Discuss findings of each group making classroom lists of each system, each system's uses, advantages, etc.
  5. Give each group a "security system" problem to solve and to show their results by making a power point presentation to the class. Instruct students that these presentations should have at least 6 slides and use creativity in design.

Differentiated Instruction

Special needs students will not all be grouped in the same group of 10 students so that all ability levels will be found in each group of 10 students.  There will be either a special ed teacher or aide in the classroom to move from group to group to help the special needs students.  Also the special ed teacher or aide will give help to these students when using the computer.

Collaboration

Before this lesson is initiated, discussions will take place on working cooperatively in a group.  Rules for a cooperative group will be listed in the room and teacher will keep reminding students of these rules.  Also, students will be taught note taking skills and research skills in their language arts classes.

Author's Comments

The number of groups may vary according to the number of students in the class. Teachers need to realize that students can research many other sites to help them find information about biometrics.

21st Century Assessment/Evaluation

Each group's power point presentation will be evaluated using a rubric
