HOW TOBACCO AFFECTS THE BODY
Grade Level:  Second, Third

Subjects Health, Art, Language Arts, Science 

Learner Outcomes:
The student will be able to state the affects of tobacco on the body.
The student will be able to state that smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to smoking.
The student will be able to identify parts of the body that are affected by tobacco.
The student will use technology to master second grade health concepts.

Materials:
Butcher paper
Pencils                                                                    Handout-Some Effects of Tobacco Use
Crayons or markers
Scissors

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Computer with Internet access

Teacher Notes:
Before beginning the lesson the teacher will need to read information on the effects of tobacco.  Sources containing information related to the topic are listed under References and Related Information.

Procedure:
1.  Teacher teaches the effects  tobacco has on the body by having students view:
           The Brain's Response to Nicotine
           Cigarette Smoking Fact Sheet
           Some Effects of Tobacco Use
           The Cost of Smoking
2. Have students write about and illustrate one effect that smoking has on the body.
3. Have students lie on large white butcher paper to trace around the outline of their bodies.  Students then draw and color
    organs inside the shape of the body that are effected by tobacco.  Then cut them out and display them.
4. Have students learn that smokeless tobacco (search for smokeless tobacco at this site) is not a safe alternative to smoking
    and the dangers of smokeless tobacco.
5. Have students take an online quiz to test their knowledge of tobacco and alcohol.  Some students may need the quiz read
    orally to them.

Modifications:
Have students work in pairs to make accommodations for special needs.

Enrichment:
Conduct an experiment about the dangers of smoking.
Do more activities on smoking.
