Outcomes:
The students will identify skills for refusal.
The students will use refusal skills to say NO to tobacco.
The students will explain reasons for refusing tobacco and demonstrate
ways to refuse.
The students will use the computer with Internet access to complete the
worksheet.
The students will interview a store cashier or manager on the prices of
tobacco products.
Duration of Lesson: 2-3 class periods of 30-40 minutes each.

(adopted in Raleigh County, WV)
Chart Tablet or Chalkboard with appropriate writing utensils
Worksheet for each student to complete
with website activity.
Computer with Internet access for each student

Notes: 1. Get a copy of the PBS
video “In the Mix”
2. Make sure you have a computer with Internet access for each student.
3. Copy worksheet and questionnaire.
Procedures:
1. Watch video on smoking from PBS
“In the Mix”. Allow students time to discuss the video in small groups.
2. Read orally and discuss pages 182-187 from the Harcourt
Health Book called Your Health.
3. Assign small groups and have them discuss reasons for refusing
tobacco products, ways to refuse tobacco products,
and laws on tobacco use. Write
responses on a chart tablet for each topic.
4. Bring groups back together and compile their answers on the
board.
5. Give each student a worksheet
to be completed while visiting

6. Give the students time to role play the use of tobacco and
ways to say NO to tobacco and other drugs using the Step 7
Problem Solving Steps i.e. a). What is the
problem? b). What I can do? c). What might happen if…? d). Choose an idea
and use it. e). Is it working? If not what
can I do now?
7. Math Activity: Discuss the costs of using tobacco products.
Look through magazines to find ads on tobacco products.
Discuss ads found. Using the interview
questionnaire, have students visit a store and interview the cashier
or the manager .
Modifications:
Work
in small groups.
Allow students extra time, if needed.
Enrichment
Activities:
1. Allow students to visit other approved websites i.e. Kids
Health, American Lung Association
on Health.
2. Read “ Bernstein Bears and the Sinister Smoke Ring”.
3. Complete pages 45- 46 from the activity book for HarcourtYour
Health student textbook.
