THE INFLUENCES OF TOBACCO


Grade Level:  Second, Third

Learner Outcomes:
The student will learn about the influences of tobacco use.
The student will write poems or limericks they can recite when confronted with peer pressure to use tobacco.
The student will design anti-smoking posters.
The student will use technology to master health concepts.

Materials:
Pencil
Paper
Poster board
Crayons or markers

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Computer with Internet access

Teacher Notes:
Some information on given websites may be read orally to students.

Procedure:
1. Have students read the information about the influence of tobacco companies on the use of tobacco.
2. Have students watch the PBS television program NOVA to learn about the regulations of the tobacco industry.
3. Have students design their own anti-smoking posters to be displayed in the classroom.
4. Have students work in pairs to write poems or limericks they can recite when confronted with peer pressure to use tobacco.

Modifications:
Work in pairs to accommodate special needs of students.

Enrichment Activities:
Learn more about the tobacco's industry influence on tobacco usage.
Visit other websites on this topic.
