OPERATION
- GET FIT
Title:
Overview
Grade
Level:
Kindergarten
through fifth Grade
Subject:
Physical Education, Health, Math, Social Studies
Description:Reports
show that young children are not getting the physical activity they
should.
We wanted to introduce our students to a fun program that they can use
to get fit and at the same time learn about areas in their state that
provide
these same physical activities. We chose four physical activities
and the locations where they are offered:
Students will
learn
about each area and how each physical activity will improve their
health.
All activities will be conducted at school during scheduled physical
education time.
After learning
about the activity of the day and its benefits, the students will
perform
the activity and calculate the amount of miles or minutes they
accomplished
that day and complete the assigned journal worksheet. Teachers
predetermine
their own conversion chart (of the miles to travel to each destination
and a number of laps/minutes performed by students) for each
activity.
As they calculate the miles converted from their journal sheets,
students
will then fill in the mileage on a map to plot their progress on our
round
trip to our four sites. They will continue this process each day
to the four destinations.
The goals of
this
unit are for students to:
-
Increase their awareness of the
lack
of physical activity in West Virginia children;
-
Participate in four physical
activities
and be able to state how each activity will improve their physical
fitness;
-
Learn that West Virginia offers
many
attractions that they can participate in to become physically fit.
