TITLE:
Aligning Values with Career SearchGRADES:9, 10, 11, 12SUBJECTS:ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTSLEARNER OUTCOMES:

VOCATIONAL/TECHNICAL SKILLSDURATION OF LESSON:The student will gain an overall focus of career inquiry.
The student will personally define success.
The student will explore values via surveys, and target a career cluster that aligns with personal values and goals.
90 minute class periodMATERIALS:TECHNOLOGY TOOLS:
- Defining Success, I-Search Paper, and Career Search Value Survey.
- Writing utensil, paper.
One teacher computer and data projector.TEACHER'S NOTES:PROCEDURES:Verify that the School Acceptable Computer Usage form is on file.
Because a career search is a process of elimination, students already know what want to do. Basic to this search is finding career clusters and traits that align with one's own values, view of success, unique skills and experiences.
Enough hard copies of Defining Success, I-Search Paper, and Career Search Value Survey handouts should be available for each student.
1. Distribute I-Search Paper to all students and discuss the contents and final draft requirements of the paper.MODIFICATIONS:2. Distribute Defining Success to all students.
3. Using the data projector, demonstrate proper procedures for compiling responses.
4. Distribute Career Search Value Survey to each student.
5. Using the data projector, demonstrate proper procedures for compiling reactions and responses.
6. After assigning a numerical value to responses, calculate a total for each category.
7. The calculated results will allow the students to pinpoint their value category and career cluster.
Modifications will be made for those individuals with IEP's in coordination with the Special Education Department.ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:Using each value category description on the Career Search Value Survey, students will identify specific vocational occupations.IGOs FOR WEST VIRGINIA:English/Language Arts: 11.82, 11.83, 11.84, 11.86, 11.87, 11.88, 11.88, 11.90, 11.91NATIONAL STANDARDS:
