Resume Writing

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
The student will identify elements of a winning resume.
The student will prepare a personal resume using key marketable words that reflect personal qualifications, attributes, and skills.
The student will draft and prepare a letter of application (cover letter) using proper block or modified block format and standard grammar usage that is job specific.
DURATION OF LESSON:
90 minute class period
MATERIALS:
  • Writing utensil and paper
  • Resume Writing handout
  • Letter of Application handout
  • 3 1/2 inch floppy disk
  • Resume Evaluation handout
  • White printer paper
  • TECHNOLOGY TOOLS:
    One computer with Internet access for each student, Microsoft Office, and printer.
    TEACHER'S NOTES:
    Verify that the School Acceptable Computer Usage form is on file.
      Schedule computer lab.
      Teacher should be familiar with Business Letters.
      Teacher needs to be familiar with Microsoft Word.  If not, the teacher may need to complete a tutorial.
    PROCEDURES:
    1.  Distribute (or provide online) Resume Writing and Letter of Application handouts.
    2.  Discuss points of content.
    3.  Browse the Resume Web sites to view the sample resumes and letters of application, and gather additional information.
    4.  Use the Website personality/attribute words as a word bank.
    5.  Using the information learned, draft and prepare a resume that conveys personal marketable skills and attributes.
    6.  Submit the final draft, to the teacher on a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk, as well as a printout for a grade. Use the Evaluation of Resume handout to make sure you have satisfied all the required criteria.
    7. Once the resume is evaluated, make the necessary corrections and revisions.
    MODIFICATIONS:
    Modifications will be made for those individuals with IEPs in coordination with the Special Education Department.
    ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:
  • Students can experiment with various resume styles of aesthetic appeal.
  • Students may create a Cyber-resume and post on various recruitment Websites.  Print your posting and bring examples to share with the class.
  • EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:
  • Grade the final draft of resume using the Evaluation of Resume Sheet.
  • Return to students for corrections.
