Title: Lesson 3: "Video Venture"

Grade Level(s): 7th & 8th

Learner Outcomes: After viewing the online video, the students will:

Understand the importance of setting college as a goal in middle school.
Learn some valuable techniques for improving their organizational and study skills.
Recognize that preparation and motivation are key to education.
Learn that parents play a valuable role in their educational success.

Duration of Lesson: One 45-minute class period. Students and parents may complete the questionnaires for homework.

Materials:

Teacher-created invitation inviting parents to join the class for an online career presentation
Questionnaires to be completed by students and parents
Extra chairs for visiting parents

Technology Tools:

Computers with Internet access
Real Player downloaded from the Internet (free download)

Special Requirements:

Obtain permission from the site web master to record an audio tape for parents without Internet access or who are unable to attend during the school day.
Remind parents to report to the office for a visitor pass or follow school policy.

Teacher Notes:

A signed Acceptable Use Policy for each student
The teacher should bookmark the site on each computer in advance to save time.
Make sure Real Player is downloaded prior to this lesson. You should practice accessing the video through Real Player prior to the class, in case additional instruction is needed. Obtain help from your in-school technology coordinator or other person if assistance is needed.
If permission is not granted for audio recording, parents and students could be scheduled for the lab on another day and if possible during another class period, depending on the feasibility of scheduling.
Prepare a handout, Helpful Hints for Parents with information about helping their child study and prepare for the future from the video. This handout will be a valuable resource for parents to help their child prepare for a career and receive help with homework: Math,English, Composition, General Writing Skills, Six Hundred Plus Subjects, and Homework Spot.

Procedures:

The teacher should introduce themselves and thank the parents for attending. Explain why they have invited them and how much they hope their child will benefit by today's computer session. Explain that students and parents will be asked to complete a questionnaire at the end of the session.
Have students locate the College Bound website, click "View Online"on video #4758 and begin watching the presentation through Real Player.
When the video is completed, distribute the questionnaires and thank the parents and students for their participation. Explain that questionnaires are due the next school day. Students will be assessed on completion of the student questionnaire, not the answers given. Parents must complete the parental questionnaire or submit a written refusal.

Modifications: Peer assistance and parent assistance as needed.

Enrichment Activities:

Invite parents and students to view the other videos from the website. Parents without Internet access need to seek out other facilities where they can access the Internet in their free time. Some libraries and other facilities have computers for public use.
Research the Internet for additional sites offering homework help.

Evaluation/Assessment: Students will be evaluated based on the completion of their questionnaire. Since there are no right or wrong answers they will be graded on effort; open and honest answers are expected.
