Lesson II

Title:  Have You Met Poly Gon?

Grade Level: 4-6

Materials:

Shape Up
Important Book
Gum Drops or Marshmallows
Toothpicks or Straws/Stirrers
Over head Geoboard

Jeopardy Power Point Presentation

Teacher Notes:

Purchase or send a letter requesting parents to send in these required items:
Coffee Stirrers
Gum Drops
Miniature Marshmallows
Toothpicks
Tip:  leave gum drops or marshmallows out of package for several days to allow them to become firm.

Procedures:

1.  Read Shape Up; Fun With Triangles and Other Polygons to review vocabulary.   After reading the book the class will list important information on a chart.

2.  Hand out geoboards and geobands.  (Classroom Management Tip:  Demonstrate how to correctly use the geobands, one flying is an accident, the second flying geoband, the geoboard and bands belong to the teacher.)  Reread the story stopping to make each polygon as it is introduced.  Teacher also makes the shapes on the overhead geoboard.  Students fold a piece of paper into thirds and label with : Name of Shape, Number of Sides, Types of Angles. Record information on a data sheet.

3.  Place students in cooperative groups.  Distribute the marshmallows/gum drops and toothpicks/coffee stirrers.  One member of the group collects the materials for the group.  Using the data sheet recorded in the last activity, students use these materials to construct models of each polygon.  These models can be eaten or placed on display by category in the classroom.

4.  Using Picture Glossary Of Polygons found on page 91 of Stretch-It! by Anne Linehan, create a mini picture glossary of polygons and their names.  Students  first use geoboards and bands to create the various multi-sided figures prior to recording them in their books.

5.  Read the Important Book; Margaret Wise Brown.  Create a template following the pattern established in the book and allow the students to write their own important book about polygons.  Each student chooses a polygon and writes one page of the book.  Share.  Compile completed pages into a class book to be added to the classroom library.

6.  Play Jeopardy  ( Power Point Presentation) to reinforce all concepts taught in this unit.

Modifications:

Cooperative Groups to support children with special needs.
Use larger marshmallows, straws, or clay to enlarge the shapes.
Make a Light Bright template for each polygon introduced in this lesson.

Triangle:

Scalene Triangle: a triangle with 3 unequal sides
Equilateral Triangle: a triangle with equal sides
Isosceles Triangle:  a triangle with just two equal sides

Polygon:

Triangle:  a threaded polygon
Quadrilateral:  a four sided polygon
Pentagon:  a five-sided polygon
Hexagon:  a six-sided polygon
Heptagon:  a seven-sided polygon
Octagon:  an eight-sided polygon
Nonagon:  a nine sided-polygon
Decagon:  a ten-sided polygon
Hendecagon:  an eleven-sided polygon
Dodecagon:  a twelve-sided polygon

Angles:

Right angle:  an angle of 90 degrees
Acute Angle:  an angle of less than 90 degrees
Obtuse Angle:  an angle of more than 90 degrees
Vertex:  the point where two sides of an angle meet

Quadrilaterals:

Trapezoid:  a quadrilateral with just one pair of parallel sides
Parallelogram:  a quadrilateral in which both pairs of opposite sides are parallel
Rectangle:  a quadrilateral with four right angles
Rhombus:  a quadrilateral with four equal sides and no right angles
Square:  a quadrilateral with four equal sides and four right angles

Grade page of the classroom Important Book for correct details about shapes.
Shapes constructed will be evaluated for correct form and sides.
Picture glossaries will be evaluated for correct number of sides and name of shape.
