Where Do You Live?

Grade Level: 3

Learner Outcomes:
Students will:
· answer comprehension questions.
· write complete sentences.
· describe a favorite day in writing.
· locate Wisconsin and West Virginia on a US map.
· state the cardinal directions between WV and Wisconsin.
· draw the inside and the outside of a log cabin.

Duration of Lesson: 2 -3   60-90 minute sessions

Teacher Notes:
· Students will be answering comprehension questions both orally and in writing
   throughout this unit.
· There will be discussions after reading each lesson.
· If a classroom set of Little House In The Big Woods is available distribute to the class.
· Each student will be provided with an assignment folder.
· Lessons will be done in cooperative groups and/or individually throughout the unit.
· An acceptable use policy must be in effect for each student before using the Internet.
· Internet sites should be bookmarked before lesson introduction.
 

Procedures:
1. Distribute outline maps of Wisconsin and the US.  Identify the states of WI and WV. Discuss the cardinal directions you would take if traveling from WV to WI. Brainstorm the best route to travel and the best mode of transportation. Have students color the states of WI and WV. Students should make a key for the US map.

2. Use a PowerPoint presentation to introduce the students to some of the things that they will hear/read about in Little House In The Big Woods.

3. Read chapters 1-2 aloud discussing the characters, setting, and other important details. Distribute a pattern of a log cabin. Students should decorate the cabin the way they picture the Ingalls’ cabin. The inside of the cabin should be drawn on one side while the outside should be drawn on the opposite side. The cabin can be cut out and displayed or placed in the student’s folder.

4. Discuss the favorite day verse from Chapter 2.  Ask students to imagine their favorite day and the reason for it. Distribute the My Favorite Day activity sheet.  Students are to explain in writing their favorite day, then illustrate that day.  The finished product may be displayed or kept in the student’s folder.

Modifications:
· Readings will be done orally with discussions following.
· Varying abilities of reading and writing skills should be noted and lessons modified
   accordingly.
· Students will utilize peer tutoring for use with students with special needs.
· Student lessons will be modified according to IEP specifications

Enrichment Activities: Students will list 8 other books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Internet or other
                                      resources  may be used.

Evaluation/Assessment:
· Evaluation will be an ongoing process throughout the lesson.  Students will be expected to
  participate in reading and discussions.
· A participation grade will be assigned for the map activities.
· Comprehension questions and vocabulary words will be graded.
· The Favorite Day activity will be graded using the marked indicators on the
     Writing Assessment form.
