Teacher Notes:
· Students will be answering comprehension questions both orally
and in writing
throughout this unit.
· There will be discussions after reading each lesson.
· Each student will be provided with an assignment folder.
· Lessons will be done in cooperative groups and/or individually
throughout the unit.
· An acceptable use policy must be in effect for each student
before using the Internet.
· If a classroom set of Little House In The Big Woods
is available, distribute to the class.
· Internet sites should be bookmarked before lesson introduction.
Procedures:
1. Review material in previously read chapters. Read Chapters 8-9 aloud
as a class. Discuss how music played an important part in the lives of
the Ingalls family. Discuss how music plays an important part in our lives
today. Students may want to share their musical talents.
2. Have students visit the Internet site: Pa's
Fiddle Music
They are to choose a tune, then design a cover that they would put
on this CD if they were to market it. Short lyrics should also be
written to accompany this music, possibly a jump rope jingle.
3. Read Chapter 10 aloud as a class. Discuss what it means to be jealous of someone. Explain that everyone has feelings of jealousy at some point in their lives and that it is a perfectly normal, but less than desirable trait. Discuss how jealousy can be harmful and why.
4. Discuss bees - their importance and their dangers. Remind students that some people have a very dangerous reaction to bee stings that requires them to be rushed to the hospital. Also remind them that bees are beneficial in that they pollinate plants and make honey.

students should write down 3 uses that they have discovered about honey
bees and 3 problems that honey bees may cause. This should be typed on
the Bee Facts Chart, printed out and placed in the student folder.
A paper copy may be distributed ahead of time to be used as a rough draft.
Modifications:
· Readings will be done orally with discussions following.
· Varying abilities of reading and writing skills should be
noted and lessons modified
accordingly.
· Students will utilize peer tutoring for use with students
with special needs.
· Student lessons will be modified according to IEP specifications
Enrichment Activities: Have students research the origins of
the fiddle or another instrument
using the Internet or reference books.
Evaluation/Assessment:
· Evaluation will be an ongoing process throughout the lesson.
Students will be expected to
participate in reading and discussions.
· A participation grade will be assigned to the CD cover and
the jump rope lyrics.
· The Bee Fact Chart will be graded for accuracy.
· Comprehension questions and vocabulary words will be graded.
