Snooping Around for Answers
 



Grade Levels:  5 - 6

Subjects:  Language Arts, Math, and Computer Technology

Learner Outcomes:
· Students will use the computer to access the Internet, locate a specific website and retrieve information.
· Students will read and evaluate the information found on the Internet.
· Students will write the answers to the questions using complete sentences.
· Students will organize specific information to discover the correct answer to the mathematical equation.

Duration of the Lesson:  one 45 minute period

Materials: teacher-made worksheet, pencil, paper

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Computer with Internet access

Teacher Notes:
· Schools without computer access could use standard reference books such as encyclopedias.
· Students must have a signed Acceptable Use Policy on file with the school if applicable.
· Website could be added to the favorites.

Procedures:
1. Students will be given teacher-made worksheets. The teacher will read the directions and answer any questions.
2. Students will access either Factmonster or Yahooligans.
3. Students must decide how to search Factmonster or Yahooligans in order to find the answer to the question asked.
4. After the answer is found, the student must respond to the question with complete sentences.
5. After all the questions have been answered, the student will use the numbers to calculate the math problem.
6. Mathematical calculations must be shown.

Modifications:
· Students with lower level computer skills may be paired with a skilled student.
· Students may use calculators to determine their answer.
· Encyclopedias or other reference materials may be used in place of the Internet.
· Teachers may create their own problems using a specific subject.

Enrichment Activities:
· Students may create their own math problems relating to any other curricular area.
· Students may create a computer learning station for other students.

Evaluation/Assessment:
The student will receive a percentage grade for answers on the worksheet.  The teacher will collect and grade individual papers.

Standard 1: Knows the location of places, geographic features, and patterns of the environment.
Standard 4: Understands the physical and human characteristics of place.
Standard 6: Understands that culture and experience influence people's perceptions of places and regions.
