Lesson 2  Up From Virginia








Grade:  1-2

Subjects:  Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Computer Technology

Learner Outcomes:  The students will demonstrate directionality (north, south, east,
                                  and west.)
                                  The students will locate the legend on a map.
                                  The students will locate and interpret the scale on a map.
                                  The students will locate water, land, mountains, WV, and Va
                                   on the US map.
                                  The students will trace the path taken on US map.
                                   The students will send electronic mail to WV Dept. of Tourism

Time Duration:  90 minutes
Materials:  VA and WV floor map, HotWheels, clock,
             The Relatives Came, recipe cards and rulers, US wall map, US Map
                  worksheet, crayons, pencils
 

Technology/Courseware:  EasyBook Deluxe software,  computer,  mapquest,
                                       WV Homepage

Teacher Notes:  Have oil cloth map made.
 

Procedures: 1.  Reread The Relatives Came.  Discuss howthe relatives traveled.
                      Begin mapping skills by discussing that up "traveling up"
                      actually means north.  The teacher will explain north, east, south,
                      and west.  The students will demonstrate with their bodies, north,
                      east, south, and west.

                     2.  Using the US wall map, the students will discover the legend on a map.
                     The main areas to explore will be directional arrows, scale (calculating the
                     distance from Va to WV), and color key of the map, i.e. mountains -brown
                     water - blue, and land - green.  Discuss how mountainous regions may result in
                     longer travel time than other
                     flatter areas.

                    3.  US MAP Worksheet
                    The students will label the states of Virginia and West Virginia and identify
                     their capitals.  They will also color the Appalachian Mt. Range-brown.
                  .  They will color the remaining states various colors and the surrounding
                     areas blue for water.  While working individually on this project, 4
                     students at a time will access the web at  Mapquest  to make driving
                     directions from the coast of Virginia to Hamlin, West Virginia.

                   4.  The students will go to the website WV Homepage  to email the Department
                     of Tourism for a free map of West Virginia.

                   5.  The students will chart a course from Va to WV on the floor map.
                    They will take the HotWheel cars and "drive" their charted courses.

Homework:  The students will take a recipe card home and copy down a favorite family
                     recipe.  This will be compiled into a 1st/2nd graders cookbook.

Modifications:  None

Enrichment:  1.  The students will continue to work on EasyBook Deluxe stories at computers.
                      2.  To extend the lesson, any student having the ability, may label all the states
                           on US map worksheet.

Evaluation/Assessment:  Students will be evaluated through participation and discussion.
                                          US Map worksheet will be graded.
