Lesson 1  Our Relatives Came

Grade Level:  1-2

Subjects:  Language Arts, Art, Math

Learner Outcomes:  The students will make predictions about
                                      The Relatives Came.
                                  The students will identify reality/fantasy.
                                  The students will identify other literature
                                  with the same theme.
                                  The students will identify immediate family.
                                  The students will interpret a bar graph.
                                  The students will go to Cynthia Rylant's
                                  home page.
                                  The students will recognize the inflectional
                                  ending (ed) found in the story.

Time:  90 minutes

Materials:  trade books, The Relatives Came, art supplies (pencils,
                   crayons, construction paper) teacher-made bar
                   graph

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Microsoft Works (bar graph)
                                                    Computer,  Cynthia Rylant
                                                             cassette tape, EasyBook
                                                    Deluxe, software

Teacher Notes:  Notify Senior Citizen Center for volunteers to
                           assist in reading, art, family trees, and recounting
                           Appalachian History throughout unit, and check
                           files for Internet Release Forms.

Procedures:  1.  The teacher will ask the students to make predictions
                      about the book cover.  After predictions, the
                      students will "picture walk" through the story.
                      The teacher will read the story The Relatives Came,
                      The teacher and students will choral read the story
                      together.
                      In large group - teacher/student discussion about
                      fiction/nonfiction, sequence of events, characters,
                      inflectional endings, and mapping.
 
 





                       2.  Introduce new vocabulary-  brood, breathing, summer,
                        relatives, Virginia, soda pop, sandwiches, traveled,
                      wrinkled, and squeezed

                     3.  The students will draw and illustrate their immediate
                     family on construction paper.  The illustrations will later
                     be put together to form a mural of a family reunion.

                      4.  While students are working individually, the teacher
                     will assist students in accessing the internet to browse

                      5.  The illustrations will be used as data to form  bar
                     graphs.  The teacher will outline a bar graph on chart
                     paper and the students will place their correct number
                     square on the bar graph.  The teacher will take the data
                     and make a bar graph on Microsoft Works to show the
                    students how technology can use data to form graphs.
                    The students will discuss the conclusions of the graph.
                    The students will use a family circle graph to list family
                    characteristics.

                     6.  The lesson will conclude with discussion of immediate
                    family and extended family (relatives).

Modification:  First graders will need to add unfamiliar words to
                       vocabulary list.

Enrichment:  Students will begin to create " My Family " stories by
                     using EasyBook Deluxe.  The students will proofread,
                     edit, illustrate, and publish story by end of the unit.

Evaluation/Assessment:  Students will be evaluated through their
                                         participation, art, and bar graph
                                         contributions.
