Lesson 4  Healthy Eating - Healthy Living





Grade:  1-2

Subjects:  Health, Social Studies, Science, Art, Language Arts, Math

Learner Outcomes:  The students will recognize and classify vegetables and
                                  fruits.
                                  The students will list vegetables.
                                  The students will list fruits.
                                  The students will compare/contrast various fruits and vegetables.
                                  The students will tell the differences between fast food and family
                                  meals.
                                  The students will interpret the Food Guide Pyramid.
                                  The students will interpret a bar graph.

Time Duration:  45 minutes

Materials:  trade book, The Relatives Came,  paper, pencils, chalkboard,
                   vegetables ( carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, potatoes, celery, etc.),
                   fruit (watermelon, peaches, apple, oranges, pears, cantaloupe, grapes, etc.)
                   fast food menus, grocery store ads

Technology Tools/Courseware:  computer, internet, EasyBook Deluxe, Doles 5 A Day,
                                                    software,  food guide pyramid,  Dole

Teacher Notes:  Homeroom mothers to volunteer
                           Have students bring in different fruits and vegetables
                           Wash fruits and vegetables
 

Procedures:  1.  Reread When the Relatives Came , discuss what they did, how they slept,
                          what they ate.  Compare/contrast how visiting relatives may be different
                          now as opposed to the relatives in the story.

                     2.  The students will classify fruits and vegetables in 2 different groups.
                          They will discuss what makes a food a fruit or a vegetable.

                     3.  The students will make a list of vegetables and illustrate each one.

                     4.  The students will make a list of fruits and illustrate each one.

                     5.  The students will go to the Dolefood site and surf Fun For Kids.

                     6. The teacher will explain the major points of the food guide pyramid. The
                          students will look at the Food Guide Pyramid on the computer.  After
                          discussion, the students will make their own food pyramid using some of
                          their favorite foods at each level.

                     7.  The homeroom mother will pass out "finger food" fruits and vegetables.
                          They will discuss how meals might be different now and in the past.
                           Discuss fast food meals vs. home cooked meals.  Discuss " favorite" meals
                          Make a bar graph stating whether student would rather have a home
                          cooked meal or a fast food meal.  Discuss restaurant menus and
                          grocery ads.

                     8.  Modifications: Check for allergies.
