Lesson 5  My Grandma and Your Grandma








Grade:  1-2

Subjects: Art, Music, Language Arts

Learner Outcomes: The students will be interactive  with senior citizens of the
                                 community and their family.
                                The students will experience Appalachian music and art provided by
                                local artists of the community.
                               The student will sample Appalachian food at a taste party.

Time Duration:  90 minutes - one afternoon

Materials:  Appalachian jams and jellies, apple butter,  apple cider, molasses, honey,
                   homemade biscuits, various Appalachian musical instruments, various
                  Appalachian arts and crafts,  vcr tapes Pictorial History of WV,

Technology Tools/ Courseware:  video camera
                                                     digital camera
                                                     computer
                                                     tv      vcr

Teachers Notes:  Contact Parents and Grandparents to help out with this activity.
                             great aunts, and great uncles will also work just fine.
                            Contact you local artisans to come to your classroom to demonstrate
                            their crafts.  Contact your local Appalachian musicians to come to your
                            classroom to demonstrate their musical instruments.   Provide enough
                            time for each to work with the children and talk.

Procedures: 1.  The relatives will read stories to the students or tell tall tales about
                         their life experiences and local yarns.
                     2.  The students will listen to the stories and then recite the story back in
                          their own language.   Videotaped for later use.
                     3.  The local artisans will show their crafts and demonstrate how they are
                          made.
                     4.  The local musicians will play their instruments and tell how and why they
                          were made.  Videotaped for later use.
                     5.  Everyone will enjoy a bunch of biscuits and butter with all the fixings.
                     6. The "grandmas" will display homemade canned food and tell how they were
                         prepared and canned.
                     7. The students and guest will sing local Appalachian songs and participate in
                         folk dancing.
                     8.  Students and relatives will watch the video, Pictorial History of WV.
                     9.  Students will begin illustrating a picture book about the day's events
                          to later make a class bigbook about the unit.

Enrichment:  Students may inquire about taking dulcimer lessons from grant
                    program at school.
