Title: West Virginia Wanderings Part II - Wheeling
Grades: 4
Subjects: Physical Education, Health, Social Studies, West Virginia Studies, Math, Language Arts
Learner Outcomes: The students will:
complete the required minutes of exercise before each lesson
demonstrate knowledge of scale and measurement in order to determine distances
between West Virginia sites
demonstrate map skills by locating the
absolute location of Wheeling, West Virginia, using latitude and longitude
use reference materials to research the significance of historical
and cultural events in Wheeling, West Virginia
complete a chronological mural of historical and cultural events in Wheeling
work cooperatively in groups to complete all phases of the project
Time Frame: four forty-five minute class periods
Materials:
Teacher Notes:
The teacher
will insure that each member of the group is responsible for part of the
research and presentation.
A computer usage agreement
for each student will be on file.
Suggested topics will
include:
Procedures:
The
students will complete the required minutes of exercise and keep a log
of their times prior to beginning the activity.
The
teacher will introduce the topics, and students will choose teams
and
topics.
Students
will determine the absolute and relative locations of Wheeling
using latitude and longitude found on the Internet search.
Students
will determine the distance from Parkersburg
to Wheeling
using scale and mileage charts on road maps.
Each student team will research a chosen topic using materials and
technology listed above.
Students will skim materials and read for main ideas.
Students will use WordPad to organize information.
Students will locate pictures and photographs of sites and events.
Students will view the film "West Virginia".
Each student team will demonstrate knowledge of the topic by creating a
segment of a mural chronologically displaying significant events in
Wheeling's culture and history.
Each student team will orally explain the segment of the mural.
Modifications:
Students not permitted
to use Internet will use other references. Students not permitted
to e-mail will use regular mail.
Special needs students
will be paired with others and will have assistance of a parent volunteer.
Enrichment:
Advanced students
can prepare a Power Point presentation chronologically showing historical
and cultural events in Wheeling.
Evaluation/Assessment:
The project will be
considered completes and submits the following checklist:
