Wanderings II - Recreational Activities by Region

Learner Objectives: The
student will
Exercise
daily and complete Activity Log Sheet.
Explore
West Virginia's state parks, forests, and scenic/recreational resources
through a variety of reference
sources.
Use
reference sources and word processor to answer specific questions, collect
information, and prepare short group reports/brochures/presentations about
recreational activities in the four geographic regions throughout West
Virginia.
Identify
recreational activities available throughout the state of West Virginia
that enhance lifetime wellness.
Demonstrate
the understanding that the violation of copyright
law is a crime.
Time Frame: Four
45 minute class periods
Materials:

Activity Log Sheet
-
West Virginia texts
-
poster board, markers, West Virginia
periodicals, brochures, maps, and other materials/resources determined
by students to complete reports and presentations.
Technology:
-
Computers with Internet, word
processing, and PowerPoint
Teacher Notes:
-
This unit is an extension of the
"West Virginia Wanderings" unit. In Lesson One of the earlier
unit, students begin the Fitness Journey around the state which continues
throughout both units.

The teacher will monitor group
work to insure that each member of the group is responsible for part of
the research and presentation.

A computer usage agreement for
each student will be on file.
Procedures:
The
students will complete the required minutes of exercising and update their
Activity Log Sheets prior to, or along with, each class period.
Students
will be divided into four groups. Each group will be assigned one
of the four geographic regions of West Virginia.
Each
group will research their assigned region for information on recreational
activities available using a variety of research sources.
Each
group will give a class presentation on the recreational activities available
in their assigned region. These presentations can be in the form
of oral reports, brochures created by students, posters, skits, PowerPoint
presentations, videos produced by students, etc.
Each
group is required to use some form of computer technology in the research
and/or presentation of project.
Modifications:
-
Students not permitted to use
Internet will use other sources to obtain information.

Special needs students will be
paired with a peer helper and will have adult assistance.
Enrichment:
-
Field trips to state parks, forests,
and/or other recreational sites to experience the activities researched.

Guest speakers on the following
recreational topics:
1. Bicycling - safety
and available trails
2. Whitewater rafting
/ kayaking / canoeing
3. Hiking
4. Camping
5. Fishing
6. Golfing
7. Skiing
Evaluation/Assessment:
The
lesson will be considered completed when each student submits the following
checklist:
__ demonstrates ability to list and locate the four geographic regions
in WV
__ researched assigned region using variety of resources, including technology
__ completed group class presentation of assigned region
The teacher will develop a grading rubric based on the above criteria.
