complete the math worksheet

Frame: two to three 45 minute class periods

Notes: An Internet permission form must be on file for each student.
Students not allowed to use the Internet can do this lesson using research
materials from the library.
Procedures:

Students
will determine the absolute and relative locations of Seneca Rock and Spruce
Knob using latitude and longitude.

Students,
in their teams, will determine the distance to be traveled and complete
the exercises.

Students
will go on the Internet to learn about Seneca Rock and Spruce Knob.

Students
will read the February 1999 issue of "West
Virginia Magazine" (article on Seneca Rock/Spruce Knob)
-
Students
will compose a story titled "My Adventure at Spruce Knob (or Seneca Rock)"
-
Students
will complete the math worksheet.
Modifications:
Special needs students will be assigned a peer tutor to help with this
project. Anyone not allowed to use the Internet will get information from
encyclopedias, "West Virginia Magazine", and the West Virginia History
book.
Enrichment
Activities:

Teacher
will invite a rock climber who has climbed Seneca Rock to talk to the class.

Class may
go on a field trip to the Sececa Rock/Spruce Knob area.

Students
may wish to do a Power Point presentation to illustrate their stories.
Evaluation/Assessment:

The math
worksheet will be graded.

Students
will read their stories to the class, and share their illustrations or
Power Point presentations.
