Title:  West Virginia Wanderings Part II - Lewisburg in the Greenbrier Valley

Time Frame:  five forty-five minute class periods

Materials:

WestVirginia road maps
travel brochures
West Virginia Studies books
other reference books including those in school library

Technology:

computers with Internet access and Power Point
on-line encyclopedias
e-mail
TV and VCR
digital camera and scanner

Teacher Notes:  An acceptable use policy will be on file.  Letters and e-mail must be approved by the teacher  before  being sent.  This is a good time to discuss computer etiquette.  The teacher will insure that each member of the group is responsible for part of the research and presentation.

Procedures:

{short description of image} The students will complete the required minutes of exercise and will keep a log of their
      times prior to beginning the activity.

{short description of image} Students will determine the absolute and relative locations of Lewisburg using latitude
      and longitude.

{short description of image} Students will determine the distance from Seneca Rock to Lewisburg using scale and
      mileage charts on road maps.

{short description of image} Each student team will research a site and will either locate pictures or photograph its
      own.

{short description of image} Each team will be responsible for producing one slide for a Power Point presentation of
      Greenbrier County. Suggested topics are:
 

{short description of image} Students will show the Power Point presentation to other classes via the school's closed
      circuit TV.

Modifications:

Students not permittedto use Internet will write a report instead.
Special needs students will be paired with others and will have the assistance of a parent volunteer.

Enrichment:
Advanced students  may also complete a video of local sites to be presented on the school's closed circuit TV.

Evaluation/Assessment:
The project will be considered complete when each  team submits the following checklist:
___   demonstrate location of WV
___   determine distance from Seneca Rock to Lewisburg
___   complete walking tour
___   research topic
___   create Power Point slide
___   (optional) video

A grade will be assigned based on the following rubric:
A+=6 items completed
A=5 items completed
B=4 items completed
C=3 items completed
D=2 items completed
F=1 or 0 itms completed
