MEDIA CENTER REVEALS WEST VIRGINIANS IN THE
CIVIL WAR

Basis of the lesson is to involve students school
wide in the study of the Civil
War and West Virginia's involvement in it.
Learner Outcomes:

To use reference materials including the Internet to gather
information

To Use the computer software to acquire information for project

To work co-operatively in groups to complete this activity

To be able to operate digital camera, videodisc, video camera,
computer cd-rom, when necessary to complete given project
Time Frame: Two days of 90 minute class periods
Materials: Encyclopedias, Reference Books,
Technology Tools/courseware: Computers, Printer,
CD-ROM's
Teacher Notes:

Get out reference materials pertinent to Civil War

Make sure computers are up and running
-
Find CD-ROM's and other software students will need
-
Make sure that you will only have one class scheduled for
that time period
Procedures : Day 1

Divide students into pairs (if possible put one computer
literate student with one not so computer literate.

Divide the class so that half work on computers and the other
half with other reference sources.

Instruct them that they are to search for and build a listing
of people from or in West Virginia who were involved in the Civil War.
-
The students should have a list of at least twenty names.
-
While compiling this list they should also list just what
their involvement with the Civil War was.
Procedures: Day 2

Have students log on to the computer.

The lists of names of West Virginian's that they have compiled
should be available.

Students should go to Puzzlemaker.com
-
Now they should click on Word
Search, Word
Search with a Hidden Message, or Criss-Cross
Puzzle. They may choose.

Here is where they will create a puzzle using the names that
they have gathered.

Puzzles will be saved and also printed out for sharing with
classmates and other classes studying the Civil War.
Modifications:
-
All handouts and puzzles will be done on blue paper
for visually impaired.

Pair special needs students with a buddy

Co-operative pairing
Enrichment activities: Students may create puzzles
with modern day heroes, civil war sites, or other interesting information
that they find.
Evaluation/Assessment: Success in creating the
puzzle and its workability will determine grade.
