Time Frame: 30 minutes for lesson (additional time for practice)
Materials: Shiloh books, yardstick, grid paper, overhead projector (optional), transparency and pens (optional), Math Shop software
Technology Tools: Computer and Math Shop software
Teacher Notes: One inch grid paper works well
Procedures:
1.
Ask the students to find on page 43 a description of the pen that Marty
built.
2. Assist
the students in using a yardstick to mark off on the floor the size of
Shilo's pen
(6' x 8'). Have students be the fence and line themselves up on the
perimeter of the
"pen" and introduce the term "perimeter." Explain that the space
inside the fence is
called "area."
3.
Distribute grid paper so that students can make a diagram of the pen, using
a scale
of 1 square = 1 foot.
4.
Assist the students in calculating the perimeter and the area. Use
a model on the
chalkboard or overhead projector.
5.
Provide Math Shop software for computer workstation so that students
can practice
measurement skills independently.
Modifications: Peer helpers at computer workstation
Enrichment Activities: Adapt levels of Math Shop practice
Evaluation/Assessment: Participation in demonstrating the pen, completed diagram, accurate calculations
