Materials:  Shiloh books, yardstick, grid paper, overhead projector (optional), transparency and pens (optional), Math Shop software

Technology Tools: Computer and Math Shop software

Teacher Notes: One inch grid paper works well

Procedures:
    1.  Ask the students to find on page 43 a description of the pen that Marty built.

    2. Assist the students in using a yardstick to mark off on the floor the size of Shilo's pen
(6' x 8').  Have students be the fence and line themselves up on the perimeter of the
"pen" and introduce the term "perimeter."  Explain that the space inside the fence is
          called "area."

    3.  Distribute grid paper so that students can make a diagram of the pen, using a scale
         of 1 square = 1 foot.

    4.  Assist the students in calculating the perimeter and the area.  Use a model on the
         chalkboard or overhead projector.

    5.  Provide Math Shop software for computer workstation so that students can practice
         measurement skills independently.

Modifications: Peer helpers at computer workstation

Enrichment Activities: Adapt levels of Math Shop practice
