Duration:
4 lessons @ 30 minutes each
Materials:

A KWL Chart
for each student.
Each student will need five 10
question surveys .

Each student will need a
KWL chart.

Definitions for the key words:
-
Tobacco - a plant that
has large leaves that have been smoked in many forms for at least 2,000
years.
-
Nicotine - a poisonous
ingredient found in products made from dried leaves of the tobacco plant
such as cigarettes, pipe tobacco, cigars, and chewing tobacco.
-
Addictive - to be dependent
on (often withdrawal symptoms occur when substance is not used).
-
Smokeless tobacco - tobacco
without smoke.
-
Each student will need 5 copies
of the 10 question survey.
Procedures:
-
Students will discuss through
a KWL chart what they already know about smoking
and what they would like to know about smoking.
-
Students
will go to the
C.O.S.T . web site to finish their KWL chart (complete what they
learned).
-
Students will stay on the C.O.S.T
. web site to find the
definitions for the following key words: tobacco, nicotine, addictive
tobacco, and smokeless tobacco.
-
Students will conduct a 10 question
survey to 5 different adults. (These adults
should be smokers.)

When the students return the
surveys the results will be entered into Excel or another spreadsheet
and charted. The spreadsheet
is listed as sheet 1 and the bar graph is listed as chart 1.

Students will go to The
Toll of Tobacco on West Virginia to view and discuss tobacco
use in West Virginia.

The teacher will lead a discussion
on the tobacco use in West Virginia.
-
Students will keep a journal
utilizing Microsoft Word or another word processing program on a daily
basis to write something they learned that day concerning smoking.
Modifications:
-
All written text will be read
to any student receiving special services or on a 504 plan as needed.
Students may work with a peer
as stated in their IEP.
