Title:  Harmful Effects of Tobacco

Learner Outcomes: 

  • Students will identify harmful ingredients in tobacco (smoking and smokeless).
  • Students will develop an awareness of secondhand smoke and its effect on the body.
  • Students will identify diseases caused by smoking.
  • Students will identify valid sources for information about tobacco smoke and its effect on the respiratory and circulatory system.
Duration of Lesson: 4 lessons @ 30 minutes each

Teacher Notes:

Procedures: 
  • Hand out a Graphic Organizer . 
  • Have students complete it as they work through the lesson.
  • Introduce lesson and new vocabulary words 
  • Using the Internet, have students do a search on harmful effects of tobacco on the body and write a report .
  • In groups of 2-3, students will choose a topic that they have researched on the harmful effects of tobacco.
  • Using the web site healthteacher.com students will become familiar with smoking terminology. 
  • Students will view a transparency on the Respiratory System  
  • Will review the structures of the Respiratory System.
  • Use activity number 4   on how tar affects the cilia.
  • On a daily basis, in their Microsoft Word journals, students will write down vocabulary words, questions, concerns, and any other item on smoking they would like to keep .
  • Bring in guest speakers, hand out any free information to students.
Modifications: 
  • Make any adjustments for students who have special needs according to their IEP's or 504s.
Enrichment Activities:
  • Students will participate in the Great American Smokeout in November.
  • Students will read reports on the intercom and do a special presentation at the PTO meeting that month.
Evaluation/Assessment:
  • Reports on Harmful Effects of Tobacco (rubric for reports)
  • Able to access websites on tobacco.
  • Daily Journals  ( rubric used to grade journal upon completion of the unit)
  • Completed Graphic organizer
