Learner Outcomes:

  • Students will define peer pressure and discover how it can be negative, as well as positive.
  • Students will improve decision-making ability concerning smoking.
  • Students will further develop personal values and attitudes about smoking.
  • Students will calculate the cost of smoking and discover how much money a person could save by stopping. 
  • Students will keep a journal utilizing Microsoft Word or another word processor.
Duration of Lesson: 4-5 lessons @ 30 minutes each

Materials:

Technology Tools/Courseware:
  • Multi-media computer with internet connection 
  • Microsoft Office  (Word & PowerPoint)
  • Data Projector
  • Calculators
Teacher Notes:
  • Some of the handouts may be printed ahead of time for student use.
Procedures:
  • Use the PowerPoint presentation Pressure to Smoke to introduce students to various sources of peer pressure and steps to  saying "no".
  • Stop for discussion after each slide.
  • Students will create a slide using PowerPoint  to create a cartoon in which they show themselves or imaginary characters using steps to act against peer pressure.
  • Slides can be combined to do a class presentation where each student presents their slide.
  • Discuss the cost of cigarettes with students.   Have students research the cost of various brands of cigarettes.  Each student should pick at least two brands.
  • Review the process of calculating the cost by using days, weeks, months, etc.
  • Students will complete the chart and determine  the cost of cigarettes daily, weekly, monthly, etc.
  • In their Word journals, students will write about things they could buy with smoking money if they do not smoke.  Starter sentence:  "__________brand of cigarettes costs $_________a year.  I could buy  _______ with this money.
Modifications:
  • Students with special needs may choose to calculate the cost of one cigarette brand.
  • Students may work in pairs to assist students with IEPs and/or 504s..
Enrichment Activities:
  • Have students visit the Kids Health for Kids site for more information on dealing with peer pressure. 
  • Students may research the price of cigarettes in other countries for comparison.
Evaluation/Assessment:

* A rubric may be used.

  • Competed PowerPoint slides
  • Completed sheet on cost of using cigarettes
  • Journal entries  ( rubric used to grade journal upon completion of the unit)
