Smoking Alternatives

Title:   Smoking Alternatives

Grade Level(s):  5-6 

Subject(s):   Health, Language Arts, and Math

Learner Outcomes: 

  • Students will use the internet to find nontraditional alternatives to smoking.
  • Students will create a web page illustrating their choice of an alternative to smoking.
  • Students will enter their five top choices of alternatives to smoking on a spreadsheet and chart results.
  • Students will continue with their journal.
Duration:   4 lessons @ 30 minutes each

Teacher Notes:
  • The teacher will want to preview the web sites prior to allowing the students on the internet .
  • The teacher will want to review/ teach web authoring before the students create their web page.
  • Teacher should have prior working knowledge of Microsoft Excel. 
Procedures:
  • The teacher will lead a discussion on what influences young people to smoke (based on information learned in this unit)  and alternatives they can choose instead of smoking.
  • The students will use the internet to explore nontraditional alternatives to smoking.
  • The students will go to the web sites Elementary Corner and Fitness online to view different sports and games as an alternative to smoking.
  • The students will choose their five top alternative activities to smoking from information obtained on the web sites visited. 
  • The top five alternative activities will be put on a class spreadsheet  using  Excel or other spreadsheet software.  The spreadsheet is listed as sheet 1 and the pie chart  is listed as chart 1.
  • The class will create a pie chart using the information from their spreadsheet.
  • Each student will create a web page and illustrate his/her top choice of an alternative to smoking .
  • The students will continue with their journal in Microsoft Word.
Modifications:
  • All written text will be read to any student receiving special services or on a 504 plan as needed.
  • Students may work with a peer as stated in their IEP.
Enrichment Activities:
  • Guest speakers can be invited to present their alternatives to smoking to the students.
  • A field trip could be taken to a local health and fitness center for the students to participate in various fitness activities.
Evaluation/Assessment:
  • Students will complete their spreadsheet and chart .
  • Students will complete their web page.  (See Grading Rubric ).
  • Students will complete their journal  ( rubric used to grade journal upon completion of the unit) .
