Risk Factors And Conditions That Lead To A Heart Attack

Learner Outcomes:
  Students Will:

1.  List the reasons why people smoke.
2.  Explain how tobacco usage is directly linked to respiratory and circulatory diseases.
3.  Investigate the challenges to quit tobacco usage and positive steps taken by those individuals who want to quit.

Duration Of Lesson:  3-90 Minute sessions

Materials:  Calculators

Technology Tools / Courseware: Excel, PowerPoint , Computer with internet access, Video Camera.

Teacher Notes:

1.  Students may work as groups if needed.
2.  All students must have a signed internet usage form on file.
3.  Teacher should have prior working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint .

Procedures:

1.  Students will view and list the reasons why people smoke from a PowerPoint presentation.
2.  Students will be grouped to research the following terms and phrases from a internet search engine.  Students will 
      incorporate a jigsaw so that they may attain the working definitions of the remaining terms not assigned to their
      particular group.

To create the jigsaw:

                 Students will be divided into groups in which each group will be assigned terms.  Number these groups 1,2,3...
                 Each group will then find their assigned term.  Students should regroup having someone from  each original group
                  in the new group.  Here they will share any information acquired from the original group.
3.  Have the students video a two-minute public service  announcement directed at the hazards of tobacco usage and trying to stop.

Modifications:

1.  Visually impaired should receive preferential seating as well as group placement for assistance.
2.  Special needs students may require extended time to complete assignments.
3.  Teacher should consult individual students IEP's and 504 plan.
Enrichment Activities:

1.  Using calculators have students do calculations for the following information:

     In 1997, 27% of  230 million  people living in America use tobacco, what is the total number of users.
     In 1998, 29% of 235 million people living in America use tobacco, what is the total number of users.
     In 1999, 31% of 240 million people living in America use tobacco, what is the total number of users.
     In 2000, 32% of 245 million people living in America use tobacco, what is the total number of users.
     In 2001, 33% of over 250 million people living in America use tobacco, what is the total number of users.

2.  Let the students share "success" stories of their cessation from tobacco usage.

Evaluation / Assessment:

1.  Student will be evaluated on viewing PowerPoint and jigsaw by rubric
2.  Public service announcement video will be assessed by rubric
