What to Do When a Heart Attack Occurs

 Grade Level:  9 

Subject:  Health, Language Arts 

Learner Outcomes:
 Students will: 

1.  Know the warning signs of heart failure. 
2. Know the steps to take for the individuals who are having a coronary. 
3. The students will know the proper location of the human heart according to a drawing of the upper human body. 
5. Emergency rescue plan, such as, what to do at home, and work. 
6. Activate the E.M.S. method. 

Duration Of Lesson:

2-90 minutes sessions 

Materials:

Video/Guide "Heart Saver" from the American Heart Association
Phone book 

Technology Tools / Courseware:
T.V. 
VCR 
Video 
Computer 
PowerPoint 
Microsoft Word 

Teacher Notes:

1. Students may work as groups if needed. 
2.  All students must have a signed an internet usage form on file. 
3.  Secure computer lab if necessary. 
4.  Teacher should consult individual students IEP's and 504 plan. 

Procedures:
1. Access to Americanheart.org for the signs of Heart Attack, the students will make a PowerPoint from the material found. 
2. Students will do a jigsaw of treatment of cardio-vascular disease. 
3. Draw and label a human upper body to locate the correct location of the heart, which is between the sternum and spinal cord. 
4. Usage of the local telephone directory to identify the numbers of the following: nearest medical facility, rescue squad, 911, and the home number or business number of the family doctor.  This will be done in Microsoft Word. 

Modifications:

1. Visually impaired should receive preferential seating as well as group placement for assistance. 
2. Special needs students may require extended time to complete assignments. 

Evaluation / Assessment:
1. Completion of PowerPoint. 
2. Student will be evaluated on their jigsaw by rubric
3. Drawing  with location of human heart
4. List of phone numbers.
