Smoking-Making an Intelligent Choice


 

  Lesson 1:
  How Does Smoking Affect Your Health and Your Appearance?

GRADE:  9,10

SUBJECTS:  Health, Math, Science

LEARNER OUTCOMES:  The students will recognize five dangers to their health associated with smoking, and they will recognize three cosmetic effects of smoking.

DURATION:   90-minute block

MATERIALS:  hard copy teacher selected  website list

TECHNOLOGY TOOLS: Computers with internet access
                                                  Microsoft Word
                                                  Printer

TEACHER NOTES:    Make sure each student has an acceptable use policy on file.
                                          Reserve the computer lab for this day.

ACTIVITIES:
     1.  In the computer lab students will be given a teacher selected website list to visit, read from, and take notes on individually. (Refer to websites listed under References.)
     2.  Students will discuss the notes they have taken in small groups assigned by the teacher.
     3.  Groups will compose a list of health dangers and cosmetic perils.
     4.  Each group will use word processing software to produce a hard copy of their lists for teacher evaluation.
     5.  Make a class list of health and cosmetic effects.

MODIFICATIONS:
Special education students will work with the assistance of inclusion teacher/peer
Consult individual student's IEP and 504 plan.

EXTENDED ACTIVITY:  Students may visit other sites from website list as time permits.

EVALUATION:  Complete rubric for each student.
