Smoking --Making an Intelligent Choice
Lesson 2
Tobacco Control Program
GRADE: 9, 10
SUBJECTS: Health, Math, Science
LEARNER OUTCOMES: The students will prepare a written and oral report on the health hazards and cosmetic perils of smoking as observed in the presentation.
DURATION: two 90-minute blocks
MATERIALS: Presentation from the American Lung Association is tailored to the request of the teacher and may include:
Famous pig lung demonstration which allows children to see and feel the effects of smoking on genuine mammalian lungs; A visual representation of the amount of tar inhaled by a smoker who has smoked one pack a day for one year; A demonstration that enables students to experience the shortness of breath that accompanies lung disease; Award-winning videos on the topics of health/cosmetic effects of smoking, secondhand smoke or tobacco industry tactics, followed by a question and answer session; A presentation and discussion of the "math" of tobacco use and/or the "chemistry" of tobacco smoke (high school level); A carbon monoxide breath test that will show elevated levels of CO in the blood of students who are currently smoking versus normal levels in non-smokers;
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS: As per requested by presenter.

Ask presenter what equipment they need set up in advance.
Schedule computer lab for Day 2.
ACTIVITIES:
Day 1 1. Students will participate
in a presentation by the American Lung
Association .
2. Students will use digital camera to take pictures of presentation.
Day 2 1. Students will use word
processing software to compose a short summary of
presentation as well as their opinion and justify opinion.
2. Students may visit American
Lung Association for additional information to use in their summary.
3. Students will state and justify opinions orally.
4. Give out Smoking
Survey to be completed for Lesson 3.
MODIFICATIONS:
Special education students will work with the assistance of inclusion
teacher/peer for written assignment.
Consult individual student's IEP or 504 plan.
Students absent day 1 will visit an approved website
and write a 2 page report.
Students absent day 2 will do written assignment at home.
EXTENDED ACTIVITY: Make Anti-Smoking Poster
EVALUATION: Complete rubric for each student.
