Count the number of cars that go past
your house in a 10-minute block of time. Make a tally mark for each car.
If you live in a less traveled area, you may want to take your child to
a place with more traffic.

To extend this activity, have your child
choose 2 colors of cars to count. Make a tally mark for each that passes
by. Take that information home and graph it.

Teacher Notes:
When you are teaching the letter c’s
sound, be sure that only the /k/ part is said. Try to refrain from adding
the /ah/ at the end.
Procedures:
You may choose to do this lesson
in a large group setting or in a center-based classroom.
Modifications:
-
Pre-K would use more of the verbal activities
and skip the paper/pencil activities.
-
Kindergarten would do both verbal AND
paper/pencil activities. Children who do not yet see lines and spaces should
not be forced to stay on the lines. Proper letter formation, strokes, pencil
grip and posture should be stressed.
