Learner Outcomes:
- Students will become familiar with science vocabulary dealing with the growth of an apple.
- Students will learn the science of growing apples, locate 4 major apple states and countries, and graph 10 types of apples based on where they grow.
Duration of Lesson: 2 days for 45 minutes.
Materials: Pencil, graphing table, World Map, USA map
Technology Tools/Courseware: computer with internet access, overhead and LCD projector

Procedures:
Day 1
1. Begin unit be introducing vocabulary needed from the vocabulary worksheet .
2. Continue by using World Map transparency and showing students the top 5
countries that produce apples, focusing on the United States.
3. Then using United States transparency map, identify the top 10 apple producing
states.
4. Brainstorm with children the different types of apples they currently know and
place them in a graphic organizer using the overhead projector.Day 2
1. Using the websites for Washington , Michigan , Virginia , Pennsylvania , and
West Virginia have students investigate the different types of apples grown in
these states.
2. Using chart graphic organizer, have students organize apples by state and type.
Modifications : Modify lessons for special needs students according to their IEP needs.
Examples of modifications could include: peer buddy, reduced
assignment, extended time to complete assignment, redirection, and
teacher assistance.
Enrichment Activities:
Students may surf the internet and discover more states/countries and types of apples
available and include more of these on an additional graphic organizer.
Evaluation/Assessment:
Students will be evaluated by participation and completion of daily assignments and
using class participation rubric .
