Guided Reading--Fibonacci and Pythagoras

 Directions:  Print this page and find answers to questions on Fibonacci and Pythagoras.

 1.  Fibonacci was born in Italy but was educated in North Africa.

 2.  His publication, Liber abaci, introduced the Hindu-Arabic

      place-value system and the use of Arabic numerals into Europe.

 3.  Fibonacci is famed for his invention of the sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, ...,

      where each number is the sum of the previous two.

 4.  The Fibonacci sequence does not appear in his book, but his problem

      about rabbits does.

 5.   Pythagoras was born in the year 580 B.C..

 6.   Pythagoras was a Greek philosopher responsible for important

       developments in mathematics, astronomy, and the theory of music.

  7.  Pythagoras and his followers noticed that vibrating strings produce

       harmonious tones when the ratios of the lengths of the strings are whole numbers.

       These ratios could be extended to other instruments.
