''Nukes in Sheep's Clothing"

Grade level:  6th, 7th, 8th

Subject:  Reading, Science, Social Studies

Learner Outcomes:  Students will be able to:

                1. Work cooperatively in groups to read and do research on the Internet.
                2. Practice oral and silent reading and apply comprehension skills.

Duration of Lesson:   3  50 minute class periods
 

Materials:

                1. Classroom set of the novel Phoenix Rising, by Karen Hesse
                2. Computers with Internet access
                3. On-line encyclopedia
                4. E-mail account for each student. (ed-mail is a safe e-mail account)

Technology:

                1. Computer/internet
                2. Printer

Procedures:

               1. After students have read 2 chapters in a class period, they spend the remainder of class time doing research.
               2. Remind students their projects are due the last week of the unit.
               3. Check on reading progress and research progress.
               4. E-mail quiz at end of third class session in this lesson.

Modifications:

               Special Education Students may work with another student in class.  Teacher may need to confer with the
               Special Education Teacher

Teacher Notes:  Parental permission may be required for use of e-mail/Internet

Enrichment:  The movie, Testament, can probably be rented at your local library.  It goes along well with the book.  It depicts the aftermath of a global nuclear war and its effect on an average suburban family.  It doesn't end happily and may be disturbing to some.  Teacher should watch it first.  It's great material for class discussion.

Evaluation:

                1. Teacher observation of group participation/on task behavior.
                2. Quiz at end of lesson
