"Ezra Gets a Puppy"

Grade Level:    6th, 7th, 8th Grades

Learner Outcomes:     The students will be able to:

 
  • Work cooperatively in groups to read and do research on the Internet
  • Practice silent and oral reading and apply comprehension skills
  • Use writing skills and a work processing program to complete a report on information gathered from research
  • Duration of Lesson:  3     50-minute class periods

    Materials:  Materials needed to complete this lesson are as follows:

    Classroom set of the novel Phoenix Rising by Karen Hesse
    Computers with Internet access
    On-line encyclopedia
    Ed-mail e-mail account for each student
    Technology Tools / Courseware:
    Computer and Printer / Internet
     

    Procedures:

    Students read 2 chapters each day, then spend the rest of the time on research
    By now, research should be wrapping up and students should begin writing reports.  Groups may work
            together and designate one student to type.  Everyone must participate in some way.
    E-mail quiz will be given on chapters 13 through 18 at the end of the third day.
    Modifications
    Special education students may work with another student in class.
    The teacher may need to confer with Sp. Ed. Teacher.
    Enrichment Activities:
    Have students:
    Work on the research reports
    Discuss cold war, and other nuclear issues
    Teacher Notes:
    Schedule Computer Lab
    Close monitoring of computer during research.

    40 points Participation

    Teacher observation of group work, on-task behavior
    E-mail quiz at end of third class session
