Lesson 2
Title: Beacons of Light
Grade Level: Third and Fourth
Subjects: Language Arts, Social
Studies
Learner Outcomes:
Students will:
-
research lighthouse information online
(suggested list is provided).
-
demonstrate knowledge of information
by completing fact sheet.
-
organize facts learned about lighthouses
by writing a descriptive paragraph.
Time Frame: two-45 minute periods
Materials: online
fact sheet, pencil, paper
Technology Tools/Courseware: Internet
sites, Cyber Patrol
Teacher Notes:
-
Arrange students into groups of two.
-
Explain Internet sites for lighthouses.
-
The use of Cyper Patrol or some such
program will prevent students from viewing inappropriate sites.
Procedures:
-
Tell students that they will be learning
facts about lighthouses from around the United States.
-
Explain that they will be reviewing information
found at various Internet sites listed on a handout. To increase computer
skills the teacher may choose to have students copy the Lighthouse
Sites information sheet from this site to each student's computer folder.
Students can then link directly to the sites by clicking on the address.
-
Students will then explore the different
sites. They will select one site and complete the Lighthouse
Fact sheet. Teacher will need to approve students selection,
making sure that all sites have been researched.
-
Ask students to share information with
the class when research is complete.
Modifications:
By working in cooperative groups
students will be grouped according to special needs. As an example
students that have trouble staying on task may be grouped with a child
that has good work habits, or a child that has reading difficulties may
be grouped with a child that reads well.
Enrichment:
Provide more internet sites for the
students to visit. Have them make
a suggested list for the class.
Evaluation: Completed fact sheet
and summary.
