Title: Lighthouse Scavenger Hunt

Grade Level: Third and Fourth

Subjects: Social Studies, Art, Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:
Students will:

demonstrate computer skills by typing in the URLs http://users.erols.com/lthouse/home.htm
call up different sites by clicking on key words
show knowledge by correctly answering given questions.

Time Frame: two-30 minute periods

Materials: Florida Lighthouse sites, http://users.erols.com/lthouse/home.htm, worksheet, answer sheet

Technology Tools/Courseware: Internet sites, Cyber Patrol

Teacher Notes: Have sites ready and worksheets ready to download or hard copies prepared.

Procedures:
Session 1

Tell students they will be reading interesting facts about several Florida lighthouses.
Students will go on an electronic scavenger hunt for sites and the answers.
Show students how to access information from the Florida Lighthouse Page using Internet ready computers.
Print out questions ahead of time for the students to preview or students copy worksheet from this lesson to their own computer folders.
Work in cooperative groups of two.
Tell students to follow directions given on Florida Lighthouse Page to complete this activity.
Students will check their answers online or with the teacher when they complete their sheets.
Turn completed sheets in to the teacher.

Session 2

Instruct students to send an e-mail message to the teacher and a classmate using the Lighthouse Postcard site (http://www.worldlights.com/world/postoffice.html)

Procedures:

Teacher will review email procedures and policies with students.
Demonstrate this activity by having the students observe the teacher sending an electronic message to a class member.
Students will enter site address and select the postcard they wish to send, then complete address, message and send card.

Modifications:
By working in cooperative groups students will be grouped according to special needs. As an example students that have trouble staying on task may be grouped with a child that has good work habits, or a child that has reading difficulties may be grouped with a child that reads well.

Enrichment:
Provide an Internet site that shows a timeline of important events in
lighthouse history. http://www.mariner.org/baylink/time7.html
Send e-mail postcards to the teacher and classmates using the Lighthouse Postcard site (http://www.worldlights.com/world/postoffice.html)

Evaluation: Questions answered on Scavenger Hunt worksheet. Cooperative Group score sheet. Check e-mail message from the Lighthouse Postcard site written by the students.
