Procedures:
Session 1
-
After completing the book Keep the
Lights Burning, Abbie, teacher and students should discuss the ways
in which Abbie proved to be responsible and the outcomes of her actions.
-
With the students discuss and list reasons
why it is important to act responsibly, responsibilities they might have,
and ways of showing responsible actions.
-
Discuss what the consequences of acting
or not acting responsibily might be in certain situations.
-
From this session any or all of the next
sessions may be developed.
Session 2
-
Place the students in small groups. Review
the list on being responsible that they had prepared the previous session.
-
Have each group pick different situations
in which they should act responsibly and have them role play the situation.
The students may choose their character to act in either a responsible
or irresponsible way.
-
Discuss each of the groups' presentations,
allow students to suggest other ways the characters could have handled
the situations they were acting out.
Session 3
-
Have students create a personal list
of things they can do to act responsibily.
-
Students may then prepare a personal
checklist using a word processing program. This sample checklist
may be downloaded to each students individual computer folder for them
to fill in the information and print off. It may also be printed
and copied so each student may have a hardcopy to complete.
-
After a given amount of time have students
report on their progress.
Session 4
Follow this link to an example of
two PowerPoint Slides on Responsible Actions
-
Using available clipart or computer draw
programs, have students prepare a presentation using a program such as
Microsoft PowerPoint or HyperStudio. The students may work in groups
or individually depending on time and availabilty of computers.
-
Instruct the students to pretend that
they have been given the task of speaking before a large group of people
and telling them about ways they can be responsible. To make their
program more interesting they have been directed to prepare a slide show
to be presented with a computer and projection device.
-
Have students decide on what they want
to share and prepare a sketch of what they are going to say and show on
their slide.
-
Students will then need to select font,
background, clipart and any sound they choose to use.
-
Once these have been decided on, students
will then be premitted to prepare their slides according to the software
program they are using.
-
Once all slides are finished the they
will all be store in one file for a presentation to be shared with the
class, other classes, PTO, or where ever there may be an opportunity.
Modifications:
Students should be placed in groups according to individual needs.
If students do individual slides a peer tutor may be used for students
having difficulty.
Enrichment Activities: Students may
print off slides and compile a class book.
Evaluation/Assessment: Teacher may
evaluate on completion of activity and work with cooperative groups.
A Cooperative Group Score Sheet may be used
