MAKING "CENTS" OF MONEY
LESSON 3
TITLE: Change Adds Up!
GRADE LEVEL: Special Education

LEARNER OUTCOMES:

The student will identify pennies, nickels, and dimes.

The student will compute sums of less than $1 for various coins.
DURATION OF LESSON: One forty-four minute period.
MATERIALS:

5 pennies per student

5 nickels per student
-
5 dimes per student
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:

Internet-ready computer.

PowerPoint.
-
Computer projector.
-
PowerPoint presentation "Change Adds Up!".
TEACHER NOTES:

All slides of the PowerPoint presentation "Change
Adds Up!" advance by clicking.

Do not proceed with procedures until students have mastered all previous
steps.
PROCEDURES:
-
Begin lesson by holding up a penny, a nickel, and a dime. Tell students
name and value of each coin.
-
Show "Change Adds Up!". Have students find
value of coins on each slide.
-
Go through the PowerPoint presentation as many times as necessary to help
students understand.
-
Give each student 5 pennies, 5 nickels, and 5 dimes. Tell students amount
of money you need and have them practice getting that amount.
MODIFICATIONS:

Students will work in pairs to facilitate needs.

Some students may need calculators.

Have students find a sum at least 2 ways (27 cents is 2 dimes, 1 nickel,
2 pennies or 1 dime, 3 nickels, 2 pennies).
