MAKING "CENTS" OF MONEY

LESSON 4
TITLE: Let's Add Quarters!
GRADE LEVEL: Special Education
SUBJECT: Math, Language Arts
LEARNER OUTCOMES:

The student will identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.

The student will compute sums of less than $1 for various coins.
DURATION OF LESSON: One forty-four minute period.
MATERIALS:

5 pennies per student
-
5 nickels per student
-
5 dimes per student
-
5 quarters per student
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:

Internet-ready computer.

PowerPoint.
-
Computer projector.
-
PowerPoint presentation "Let's Add Quarters".
TEACHER NOTES:

Do not proceed with procedures until students have mastered all previous
steps.
PROCEDURES:
-
Review name and value of penny, nickel, and dime.
-
Show students a quarter, and tell them it is worth 25 cents.
-
Show "Let's Add Quarters". Have students
find value of coins on each slide.
-
Go through the PowerPoint presentation as many times as necessary to help
students understand.
-
Give each student 5 pennies, 5 nickels, 5 dimes, and 5 quarters. Tell students
the amount of money you need, and have them practice getting that amount.
MODIFICATIONS:

Students will work in pairs to facilitate needs.

Some students may need calculators.
