MAKING "CENTS" OF MONEY
LESSON 5
TITLE: Counting Change
GRADE LEVEL: Special Education
SUBJECT: Math, Social Studies and English Language Arts
LEARNER OUTCOMES:

Student will determine how much money he has.

Student will be able to choose an item that he has enough money to purchase.

Student will be able to locate the price of an item.

Student will count out the money to purchase an item.
DURATION OF LESSON: Two forty- four minute periods.
MATERIALS:
-
empty items (examples: soup cans, cereal boxes, cracker boxes etc.)
-
stickers for price tags
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:
TEACHER NOTES: This activity can be changed as the students
improve their money skills by changing the price tags of the items.
As students' knowledge increase you should increase the amount of the items
in the store.
PROCEDURES:

Students bring in empty "trash" to be used at the store.

Students place the "trash" in sections that they think the item is worth.

Price items according to students' suggestions.

The prices of items should vary from 1 cent to 12 cents (the high price
item is to teach students to save their money if they want something).

Students go to the store one at a time and pick an item or items that they
wish to buy.
-
As they check out they count the pennies to pay for their things.
-
After all students have gone to the store, each student goes over what
he bought, for how much and the amount of money he has left.
-
Repeat this activity each time a new coin has been introduced.
MODIFICATIONS:

Prices of items.

Amount of money each student has.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:

Students can take turns being the cashier and totaling the amount of each
student's purchase.

Take students on a field trip to a store. Each student is responsible
for paying for an item of his choice. The students have to count
out the correct amount of change to purchase the item.
EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT: Students count out the correct amount
that they need to purchase the items.
