MEASURING BEAST

Lesson One:Length, Width, Height

Grade Level:8

Subjects:  Math, Science, Art

Learner Outcomes: Students will recognize the concept of
        1. length
        2. width
        3. height
and how to measure each in metric units

Duration of Lesson:  1-2 50-minute class periods
 

Materials:   Metric rulers, irregular and regular shaped objects, data table

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Power Point, Microsoft paint

Teacher Notes:


Procedures:
       1. If applicable, teacher will introduce lesson using power point
       2. Students will be in groups of two
       3. Students will define height, length, and width within their group
       4. Class will decide on an accurate definition for the terms
       5. Students will either make a spreadsheet or use a data sheet provided to
           record their measurements
        6.Students will use a minimum of 3 regular shaped objects to take
           measurements of length, width and height
        7.Students will use a minimum of 3 irregular shaped objects to take
           measurements of length, width and height

Modifications: Plan cooperative learning groups and team students so you have
        high and low academic students together

Enrichment Activities:
        Gro-Beast Lab (Lesson 5)
        Students use paint program to make poster labeling length, width and height
        of regular and irregular shaped objects

Evaluation/Assessment:
        Students’ data table will be a classwork grade
        Students will be given two regular and two irregular objects to measure for
        quiz grade
