Rain Forest Facts

Grade Level: 1-2

Subjects: Language Arts, Science, Art

Learner Outcomes:     Students will be able to find facts about animals.
                                  Students will be able to write complete sentences.
                                  Students will be able to put words on ABC order.
                                  Students will be able to do research.

Duration of Lessons: Two to three 40-minute sessons

Material: Books about the Rain forest
               Encyclopedia (Encarta, Comptons)
 

Technology Tools: Internet-ready computer, Word Processor, Kid Works Deluxe by Davidson, Print Artist or Print Shop
 



 


Teacher Notes: This activity can be a whole class activity or individual student can be assigned individual letters of the alphabet.  Find Internet sites and bookmark before you begin this sesson.

Procedures: 1) Introduce lesson with videotape, Jungle, (Eyewitness) by BBC Lionheart Television.  Read books about Rainforest animals.
                   2) Select animals that begin with a each letter of the alphabet.
                   3) Use Kid Works Deluxe Software to make a booklet.  Page one will be a title page.  The rest of the pages will contain facts.  On the left side of the page put a letter of the alphabet and write facts about the animal.  On the right side (insert) allow students to draw a picture of the animal.
      If Kid Works Deluxe is not available, Microsoft Word  can be used. With Word make a table consisting of six squares on each page.  Insert a letter of the alphabet in each square.  Leave space for the student to draw a picture.  Insert information about the animal underneath the space for the picture.
                   4) Make a book cover using the word processor, Print Artist (Sierra), or Print Shop (Borderbund).
                   5) At the end of the book, place a comment page for the students and for the parents.
                   6) Allow the students to take the book home and read it to their parents.  After reading the book, encourage students and parents to make comments.

Modifications: In a group situation, teachers can allow and encourage all students to participate. When completed as an individual, students that need extra attention can be easily identified and assisted.

Enrichment activities: Make a triorama using Rain forest animals as the subject. Each triorama will center around an animal of the student's choice, and the student will create an appropriate environment for that animal.
