Grade level: Grades 1-2
Subjects: Science, Math, Language Arts
Learned outcomes:
Students will be able to follow directions.
Students will be observers and participants.
Students will measure.
Students will graph and chart information.
Duration of lesson: Ongoing for about six weeks
Materials:
Teacher Notes: The teacher will
supply plants for terrarium.
A greenhouse attendant may suggest other plants that would be suitable.
The cooks at the school or restaurant will provide you with a one gallon
jar and lid.
Students should be divided into groups of three or four.
Students should construct the terrarium by themselves.
Procedure:
The students will--
1) Gather all supplies.
2) Spread a layer of
gravel and then a layer of charcoal on the jar bottom.
3) Pour one to two layers
of soil over the gravel and charcoal.
4) Place the plants firmly
in the soil making sure the roots are competely covered. Be sure
one of the plants is placed very close to the side of the jar to
measure as it grows.

mini rainforest to record daily growth. Also, use the Magic tape
to mark the height of one of the plants. Record the height
in inches and centimeters. Keep this record in Microsoft Word.
Continue to record growth for several weeks.
9) Write journal entries
to record daily observations in a word processor.
After the two week period, the students will chart the first week's growth and compare it to the second week's. Again, a student will make a journal entry to compare growth. Continue to record growth and make observations for several more weeks.
At the end of the session, make a graph in word or excel to chart the growth.
Modifications: The teacher will allow and encourage all students to participate. Students that need extra attention will be identified and assisted.
Enrichment activities: Give students a check-off list of things from the rainforest to take home. They will identify and locate three items that come from the rainforest. The students are to bring in the three items. First the items will be sorted and grouped. Then the items will be graphed to compare for most and least. The items can be displayed to the rest of the school. Complete the checklist for each child.
Evaluation/Assessment: The students will be graded through active participation and discussion; journal entries will be checked.
